Technical & Scientific Capability in Bitumen Engineering

Our expert team specialises in bitumen chemistry, polymer modification, nano-modified emulsions (NME), and conventional emulsion technologies. We provide industry-leading Performance Grade (PG) binder testing in accordance with SATS 3208, enabling performance-based evaluation across various temperature ranges for reliable, specification-compliant road construction.

Advanced Laboratory & Chemistry-Led Binder Design

Our state-of-the-art laboratory supports Performance Grade (PG) testing and advanced chemical analysis, including SARA, TAN, and FT-IR testing. This enables us to manage bitumen source variability, optimise formulations for imported and local binders, and establish consistent, reliable road surface performance.

Bitumen Import Procedure

Tosas historically sourced bitumen from South Africa’s four bitumen-producing refineries. As local production wound down — ceasing entirely in 2025 — we invested heavily in bulk storage, securing supply in an import-dependent market. Every imported consignment is verified through FTIR fingerprinting, performance grade testing, SANS 4001-BT1 compliance and pilot blending trials, ensuring the consistency the industry has expected from Tosas for 50+ years.
